I BLINKED RAPIDLY, trying to drive away the lingering sleep. Nisha’s home looked dreary today, creating pale shadows in the grey, overcast weather. Being sleep-ridden wasn’t helping to brighten up the outlook. The only real bright spot was the fact that I would actually get to see Nisha.

I shifted in the overly comfortable lounge chair in the formal living room and checked my watch for the umpteenth time. It was eight-thirty, making me thirty minutes early, despite reaching my home at three in the morning. After just about three hours of sleep, I had to rush to my uncle’s place in Queens to pick up my sherwani. I also boxed up three more kurtas to take home, in case of emergency traditional dates like the one today.

I pressed the back of my palms on to my eyes and sighed. It felt good to keep my eyes closed, even for a few seconds. This had been a week on steroids, with multiple cyber-attacks at TechNotes. While we successfully squashed them, the fact that the hackers were now on to Note Nirvana only means they were not letting up anytime soon. I had left a note for Peter to keep a close watch before I left in the morning.

And then, there was Nisha. Every second I had to myself, she was on my mind. Her business drive and her personal vulnerability were contradictory, in an intriguing and tempting way. No amount of research could have prepared me for the sweet girl inside the successful startup founder. She was not ready for this marriage, though. Actually, she was not ready for any relationship. She was too worried about being shadowed by the men in her life. Who could blame her? I had seen my mother’s struggles firsthand.

Considering how our companies were rivals, I didn’t doubt her fears. The worst part was I didn’t have a plan. Smart as I was, I didn’t have a single clue as to how to keep our companies separate and still convince Nisha to say yes to our marriage. The fact that her company was inching in on us didn’t help at all. My protective instincts to save my company had kicked in time and again, and I had become a full-throttle mama bear at work.

And yet, switching mama bear mode off was so easy when I was with Nisha. When I looked at her, I didn’t see a competitor. I saw a beautiful, kind woman who I would like to spend my life with. I wondered what she saw in me, if anything. So far, all I got was reluctance about the whole marriage idea, and not to mention, a general hatred for my species.

I rubbed my face, brushed my hair with my fingers and checked the time again. Twenty-five minutes more to go. I probably should have napped in the car for few minutes instead of waiting in here and announcing my desperation to the world. I was just about to walk back to my car when I heard heavy footsteps.
